through a murderous fire of grape and canister in delivery orders and
re-formed the crowded lines.
Service at Gettysburg: During
Pickett's Charge the 13th and 16th Vermont regiments of Stannard's Brigade are
well known for their change of front to fire into the flank of Pickett's men.
During this maneuver Lieutenant Benedict braved "a murderous fire
with grape and canister" to deliver orders on the field. When the
13th wheeled to fire into Pickett's flank, many overeager men bunched up,
"four to eight files deep." Benedict walked along the line
"with his back tohe enemy and between the two fires," until the line
was straightened out.
